Benjamin Syms Middle School

Expected Workload:

  • Each day, we will cover vocabulary, writing, reading, and grammar.

  • Students typically write an essay or two each month (as per HCS curriculum).

  • We write essays in parts: brainstorm, outline, introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs.

  • Homework is typically to complete what was not finished in class, but may change as needed.

  • Additional help is always available to your student via email, video, or during class.

  • Classwork is always done together, as a class, with a teacher model.

Grade Distribution:

Major Assessments: 40%

Students write essays in multiple steps, using one of the 42 VDOE released prompts. Both the extended web and final draft of the essay are recorded as major assessments.

Minor Assessments: 35%

Students complete larger classwork assignments, such as quizzes and notebook checks for minor assessment grades. When writing an essay, the introduction and conclusion paragraphs each count as minor assessments.

Practice: 20%

Students complete daily classwork assignments. This includes graphic organizers, discussion questions, comprehension questions, prompt annotations, and notes.

CSA: 5%

Students take a Critical Skills Assessment each quarter. This district-provided standardized test goes into the grade book as 5% of the final grade for that quarter.

  • StudySync (grammar, reading, and vocabulary practice)

Late Work Policy:

  • If it is assigned on Friday, it must be turned in on a Monday.
  • After the week deadline, the highest grade will be a 50%.
  • This does NOT apply to in-class tests/quizzes or scheduled district tests.
